Chemical Peels

Chemical peel uses a chemical solution to make better and even the texture of the facial skin by eradicating its injured outer layers. It is helpful for people with facial blemishes, wrinkles and rough skin pigmentation. Phenol, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and alphahydroxy acids (AHAs) are used for this purpose. The specific formula used depends upon each patient's needs. Although, chemical peel can be done in combination with a facelift, it is not an alternate to surgery, nor does it stop the aging process. AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) are the serenest of the peels. They are normally sugar resultant. Therefore, their names are glycolic, malic, lactic and other fruit acids. These peels are normally done by a dermatologist and have least healing time.

BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acids) – The major difference between these acids and alpha hydroxyl acids (AHA) is that these are only oil soluble. There is mainly only one BHA, salicylic acid. This exclusive feature of being oil soluble makes this acid very useful in removing bacteria, dead skin cells and sebum oil from deep inside the pores.

TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) – TCA or trichloroacetic acid peels are deeper average depth peels. TCA is a more effectual and longer lasting peel than the sugar and citric peels as it goes deeper into the skin and can therefore treat more skin disorders, conditions and diseases. TCA, being a deeper peel, is effectual on more skin disorders and problems.

Phenol Peels: Phenol peels are the deepest chemical skin peels among all. They usually work as long lasting cleansers as they reach deeply into the skin. There are several derivatives of each of these 4 groups, but mainly these are the diverse chemical skin peels. DIY at home chemical peels are frequently made of TCA and AHA mixture. They work well to smoothly remove the upper layers of skin. The ratio for TCA is usually around 20 – 30% to avoid inflammation of the skin. A good chemical peel would soften up the upper layers of skin, and over the period of a week, the skin would smoothly start to flake off. When the outer layers of skin fall off, new red and fresh skin would start to appear.
